Pilkington Optiphon - Sound reuducing acoustic glass

Don't be fooled by company’s offering triple glazed units as a viable option for sound reduction, Our special sound reducing glass is fantastic value for money and far more effective than triple glazed units at sound reduction. This is due to the nature of how sound works. When a sound wave hits a given material that material will resonate at a given frequency allowing the sound to pass straight through... it doesn’t matter how many layers of the "same material" are used, the sound will inevitably get through. To combat this you need is a unit made up of several different materials. Another important aspect of sound reduction in a glass unit is the cavity (the gap in the middle of the glass unit). By using traditional triple glazing you are reducing the vital gap needed for good sound reduction. This is why Pilkington Optiphon is the best choice for people in noisy areas suffering from traffic noise. Pilkington Optiphon is also ideal for music rooms or studios.

Pilkington Optiphon™ is a high quality acoustic laminated glass that offers excellent noise reduction without compromising on light transmittance or impact performance. The desired acoustic performance can be achieved through combining various thicknesses of glass with a special PVB (polyvinylbutyral) interlayer. With a large variety of product combinations, Pilkington Optiphon™ offers the opportunity to achieve specific noise reduction requirements.

Pilkington Optiphon™ can be combined with other Pilkington products for a multi-functional noise-reduction monolithic glass or a multi-functional noise-reduction Insulating Glass Unit providing additional benefits, such as thermal insulation, solar control or self-cleaning.

Insulating building interiors against noise has now become a major design criterion, due to the rapid increase in road and air traffic and the development of the urban motorways.

These and other sources of noise such as railways, discos and neighbours can cause people to experience inconvenience, annoyance, stress and even diagnosable illness. Glazing and windows can play an important part in reducing this noise. It can also provide privacy in applications such as offices, lecture theatres or hospitals.
